What is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a dental procedure that is performed in order to save an infected tooth from extraction, when the soft inner tissue of the tooth (called the pulp) becomes exposed or infected. This can happen because of injury, a cavity, or because of a crack in its shell that leads to failure of the outer layer. Since teeth cannot heal themselves, an infected tooth must be treated or it can cause considerable pain, an abscess, or even tooth loss.
A root canal is suggested if your cavity is deep enough to become infected and spread to the nerves in the root of your tooth. A root canal may also be recommended for cracked or damaged teeth (where your tooth’s nerves are exposed).
What is the Root Canal Procedure?
The first step will be administering an anesthetic to ensure you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the root canal procedure. Next, your tooth’s canals will be thoroughly cleared of bacteria and infected tissue, disinfected with a cleaning solution, and then dried. It will then be filled with a special medicated dental filling material, which restores the tooth to its full function. The last step involves sealing the tooth.
Often, a crown is placed over your tooth for further protection. This can prevent infections from spreading to other areas and help keep you and your smile healthy. Contrary to popular belief, a root canal procedure is typically no more painful than filling a cavity. With safe and effective anesthesia, precise tools, expert hands, and proper imaging technology, a root canal does not have to be painful. In fact, it relieves pain!
