What Is TMJ?
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint itself, the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull on both sides of your mouth and allows your jaw to open and close as well as move from side to side. Generally, and for most people, the TMJ works well and causes no problems. Other times, and for some people, problems arise with the TMJ, which can cause considerable pain and discomfort, and affect your overall health.
What is TMD?
TMD, or temporomandibular Disorders, refer to various conditions and issues associated with the movement of the jaw, and pain in and around the jaw. For some people, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) becomes stressed and overworked. When this happens, it can lead to TMD, or any disorder of the temporomandibular joints, jaw muscles, and nerves. TMD and related disorders can cause pain in your jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement, as well as facial pain, frequent headaches, and a variety of other issues that can show up. Bruxism, which presents as grinding or clenching of the teeth, is one of the most common forms of TMD.
Bruxism
If you have been experiencing grinding or clenching of your teeth, you could be suffering from Bruxism. Bruxism is a common form of TMD (Temporomandibular disorders) that involves grinding or clenching your teeth. It can be done unconsciously while you are awake, or while you are sleeping. If bruxism is mild, it often requires no treatment at all. However, more severe, and frequent cases can cause extreme pain and discomfort, headaches, and damaged teeth. Bruxism Grinding Appliance
If you suffer from Bruxism, or another form of TMD, a custom night guard or splint may be prescribed. These plastic dental appliances are custom made to fit your unique mouth and will be specially constructed to take into account the severity of your condition; the more your grind, the harder and sturdier the appliance will be. They are worn over your upper and lower teeth to realign your jaw and help ease the pain associated with any misalignment. The idea is that by realigning the jaw and preventing the jaw from clicking, it will help to alleviate symptoms. The appliance also helps to protect teeth from the physical wear and tear often involved in the constant teeth grinding of bruxism, so that instead of wearing down the enamel of your teeth, you bite against the appliance instead.
