Sedation Dentistry

Experienced Sedation Dentistry

Looking for sedation dentistry? You need to find a dentist with more than a passing familiarity, but one with professional training and family friendly practice. At West Airdrie Dental, our dentists use sedation dentistry on an everyday basis.

Don’t Stop Your Treatments!

Anxiety and fear cause patients to discontinue their dental exams and treatment. One difficult exam can morph into a lifetime of avoiding the dentist. But when you stop going to the dentist, you leave your mouth and body exposed to decay and disease.

Relax In The Dentist’s Chair

In West Airdrie, we offer three types of sedation to relieve your anxiety and help you relax. Dosing is available for children as well as adults, so your little ones won’t develop dental anxiety as they grow! Options available include:

  • Nitrous Oxide: A gaseous mixture delivered by a nosepiece.
  • Oral Sedation: A pill taken a few minutes before your appointment begins.
  • IV Sedation: A sedative is administered intravenously; you’ll sleep through your treatment!

Know Before You Go

Before you choose a dentist, especially for a sedated appointment, you’ll need to ask a few questions. Knowledge is power and helps you make an informed decision! Some things to ask:

• What ages do you serve?
• What services do you offer?
• Do you perform sedation for those ages and services?
• How do you handle a patient with specific or special needs with sedation?

Your Health Comes First

At West Airdrie Dental we want the best possible outcomes for our patients, including the outcome of receiving dental sedation. Ask your dentist which option is best for you!

Why Sedation?

We offer three types of sedation at West Airdrie Dental. Each has a different purpose and effect. Talk to your dentist about which one is right for you:

Nitrous Oxide, or laughing gas is administered by a nose piece that you wear through your appointment. It will “take the edge off” to let you relax. You might feel a little light headed, but it won’t put you to sleep. Nitrous works for short visits, as it wears off quickly to allow you to drive home.

Oral Sedation comes in the shape of a pill or liquid. The effects depend on the type prescribed: it could make you sleepy, or relax you to the point of not recalling your visit. Your West Airdrie sedation dentist will work with you to decide the best type and amount of the sedative for you and for your procedure. It’s important to note that oral sedation does not act as a pain reliever. You will still need to receive an anesthetic before any procedure can begin.

Intravenous (IV) sedation is given in cases that require a deep sedation. Because it is administered through an IV line, it acts fast, allowing you to fall into a deep sleep. Once the IV is removed, the medication wears off quickly.

Managing Your Dental Anxiety

It’s not unusual for patients to be nervous about coming to the dentist. In fact, studies estimate that at least 15% of the population has dental anxiety. Whether you have an extensive procedure or just a short visit scheduled, you’ll feel more comfortable if you are relaxed. Your dentist at West Airdrie Dental has options for you!
